Will Google Hangouts become equivalent to Whatsapp?

Is Google Hangouts new SMS feature a prelude to a full-blown data messaging app?

Will Google Hangouts evolve into a messaging app along the lines of Whatsapp, Viber, Line, etc?

I’ve read other blogs earlier which mentioned a few weeks back that Google’s messaging app is becoming similar to Whatsapp.

Thanks. True! That is reason for asking the query! Please tell ,1) how come the article titles the messenger as Whatsapp-like when the messenger has only sms+mms ( phone operator messaging functionality ) and not whatsapp like internet-messaging functionality?

    2) Do you foresee whatsapp enabling "like" / "comment" / "share" in group messsages? , multiple messages in whatsapp groups get disarrayed and it is haphazard for user to like or comment a specific post within milleu of multiple messages

Thanks. That is very sincere research and response. So pl reiterate , do you imply that the messenger in Google play link ( in my comment ) , is not the messenger which you weblinked to economictimes and myce.com blogs , in your reply?

A comparison of multiple messenger apps
    http://www.nickrock.me/google/hangouts-vs-imessages-vs-skype-vs-whatsapp/
well Hangouts supports SMS integration, so basically you will not need a different application fHangouts messages and your SMS messages. Google Hangouts perhaps will get some kind of Whatsapp messaging feature inside of it.

Do you think that the new messenger app from Google would get non-sms ( internet messaging , like whatsapp ) feature

well google must do some public study in order to find out which features users would like to have

Please note comment to Susendeep's response and add to your reply : Thanks. Please see that query is for a blog news of October 17 vis-a-vis a messenger released on about 14th November :

      Blog : http://www.engadget.com/2014/10/03/google-messaging-app/

      Messenger : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.messaging&hl=en

      a) Is the messenger released in playstore link , same as the app mentioned in blog link?

      2) a) If yes , then would this messenger evolve into data based messaging from it's current sms only feature?

      b) If no, would it be a third messenger if released?

      1) Google releases Whatsapp competitor, Google Messenger
      http://www.myce.com/news/google-releases-whatsapp-competitor-google-messenger-73476/?PageSpeed=noscript
It has all the same Features common what you find it in Whatsapp and all other Messenger App. In extra, it support Ability to block SMS senders, audio messages, colored text threads, message archiving and emoji support. Unlike other Google products, the messenger will not force users to use their Google login.
      http://m.economictimes.com/articleshow/44141070.cms

it can be a third messenger. This new app won’t even ask that users commit to a Google login, as the company does with their other apps. It will be free to use, like other popular messaging systems in the region

Thanks. Due to misunderstanding , it was edited wrongly, I implied to ask about new Google messenger , which does not have non-sms messaging feature , but few weeks back , you may have read blogs about Google working on messenger to compete with Whatsapp and likes and providing features like translating and …..!?

In order for it to become like that, many people have to get Hangouts app preinstalled.Google also has to remove such annoyances that many reviwers have found.

It's still a secret and still not much information is available.I think Google is doing so to have a good pie of messaging market.

Good job at searching the app, which i couldn't even find it.I think Google released it silently or media didn't covered it.

I think that Google is trying to improve its image it got with Hangouts app by providing this app which is now basically a SMS app.I think Google will monitor feedback from its users, improve it so as to make it stand out from competitors during next year launch.

I think they'll add an update to the app to make it a whatsapp competitor.

Thanks. 1) Do you foresee the feature of direct 'liking' / commenting / sharing under the specific message , for conversations in whatsapp groups , so that user does not have to manually mention , to which message in a group , the comment or like is for?

      2) With Telegram messenger gaining popularity in Google Play Store rankings and having group limit of 200 , do you foresee whatsapp increasing group limits further to 200 from 100 of a few days earlier?

    • Susendeep.D
      November 26, 2014 at 3:49 pm

I think Google might or might not do so as not to get the image of 'yet another messaging app with same features',and people would like to have unique and useful features.

WhatsApp increased group limit upon persistent requests from users. So,if WhatsApp users feels the need and they demand continuously,so it might be possible.

      November 29, 2014 at 4:16 pm

I think they might not enable this as it'll require GPS which is reource taxing. The main aim of the app founders was it to be simple and light.

Actually,I don't use any IM app except online Google Chat(now Hangouts).

It would be those features which people find in alternative apps like WhatsApp Plus.

Thanks. Nice to know, I thought that , their team would be introducing "reach" on posts., like , almost everyone is forwarding in whatsapp,, so how much "reach" ( shares in figure ) a post gets , would be known. Please comment
