Why is Facebook’s feature that locates nearby users of the service generating so much skepticism while Google Plus already has this feature?┬áIs it pre-release confusion about privacy?

I think you are exactly right. People are always seeing their privacy going away more and more. There was the same skepticism when Google put theirs out, too. I would be willing to bet that the uproar will die down after people start using it and then forget about it.

It's also notable that Google Plus isn't as big as Facebook, so people see using the service as optional. Many think of Facebook as mandatory at this point, and as such get more worked up about it.
