Jessika Kerby-Stanger asks:
I’m trying to root my phone using SuperOneClick and I kept having to download software to continue the process. I finally got past the “waiting for device” hang-up and I seem to be stuck now on “running rageagainstthecage” can someone please please help me? Windows 7 laptop (dell) and Motorola Razr version 2.3.6 (verizon)

June 22, 2012SuperOneClick is actually meant for devices running Android 2.3.3 and lower, with few exceptions for 2.3.4 and above. SuperOneClick uses an older exploit that doesn’t work anymore as the exploit has been fixed. Many phones now have to be rooted by what is called Odin which flashes a different recovery onto the phone and also allows you to install different ROMs, although with the RAZR, the bootloader is locked. Here is what you would need to root your device: http://www.androidauthority.com/droid-razr-utility-tool-rooting-clockworkmod-55845/
Always be careful and follow instructions carefully to make sure you don’t ruin the device. Most times devices become bricked are by user error. As long as you follow carefully, all will be fine. I have rooted and installed various ROMs and a few devices and came across some scary points, but if it doesn’t work right the first time, try again. Sometimes it takes more than once to install properly. Good luck!
