apih asks:
I have downloaded a zip file and transfered it to my laptop using a thumb drive. But when I try to unzip it, it does not work but instead tries to open via VLC. How can I fix this?

June 21, 2012Somehow the program associated with opening .zip files was changed to VLC. To change this (if this is Windows Vista, though it should be primarily the same in XP or 7) would be either to right-click on the .zip file, select “Open With” (if available), select the “Browse” button, click where it says “Computer” on the left hand side of the window that just popped up, open the Windows folder, then select Explorer (or Windows Explorer) and click on “Open” (or “Save”). This should take you back to the “Open With” window. Make sure the “Always use this program to open this kind of file” is check marked, then click ok. If you use a third party program to open .zip files like 7-zip or WinRAR, when you get to the “Open With”: window, check to see if the program name shows up on the list, if not, click on “Browse”, then scroll through the names of the program folders and find the program you would like to use, open the folder and select the .exe file in the folder to open the .zip file. If you do not have the “Open with” option when right-clicking the file, select “Properties” instead. In the “General” tab you should see “Open with” on the left and the program associated with the file, and on the right there will be a button that says “Change”. Click on “Change”, then follow the above directions as this opens the “Open With” window you need to change the program that opens the file. Hope this helps and good luck!

June 21, 2012You probably changed the default program to open the file by mistake. Right click on the file, and then select “properties” and then you’ll see “open with” “VLC”, change it to your Zip software, either 7Zip or WinRAR. and click ok or apply.
And you’re good to go

June 21, 2012Right click the desired file you want to open and under the option of “Open with” select the appropriate program like 7zip or WinZip or WinRar.
Also you can select Properties (on a right click to the icon) and change the default program that open the file.

June 21, 2012Zip file type in your computer might be associated with the VLC Media Player. Download 7-Zip, associate zip file with it.

June 22, 2012You might have associated your .zip files with VLC. Right click on the file, select ‘Open With’ from the context menu, then click ‘Choose default program’. If you have a zip/unzip application installed, it should appear in the window that opens. Select it, if present or select ‘Windows Explorer’. You can check ‘Always use the selected program to open this kind of file’ and then click OK.

June 22, 2012Hello, eaisest way is to use the open with option. To access this option, this is what you could do:
– hightlight the zipped file
– right click on it
– click on open with option
– point it to whatever program you have to open zipped files or you can select windows explorer as default and it will open it for you
– you can also select the choose default program that shows when using the open with option and point it to program you use to unzip compressed files.

August 28, 2012Apih, right click on the file you are try to open, go to properties, General pop up windows will show, go to Change and click and choose recommended program or browse for the appropriate one you need from your program files list. Their you have it. That should be able to fix your problem in a jiffy.
