Why can’t I open any desktop shortcuts after changing a file association?

Dakota Fergen asks:

My friend tried to send me a video in a .INK format and I tried to run it with Windows Media Player with no luck, so then I tried to run it with Java and now every program I place on my desktop wants to run with Java. How can i fix it?

Editor’s note: Dakota is probably referring to a .LNK (.lnk) file, the common Windows shortcut format.

By running with java, you have probably associated all .ink files with java. Since the desktop shortcuts have the extension .ink, they will now run using java.

Download this file (http://www.winhelponline.com/fileasso/lnkfix_vista.zip), unzip it and double-click on the included .reg file. This one is for Vista/7. Use http://www.dougknox.com/xp/fileassoc/linkfile_fix.zip if you have XP.

you can use windows restore point to revert back to earlier state just before the problem.
possible your friend attached the link (.INK) and not the actual file.

You can get to System Restore by clicking on Start/All Programs/ Accessories/System Tools. You should see it there.
