Why can’t I access my 500GB Seagate Expansion portable drive?

Every time I open my hard disk, it says ‘ The volume doesn’t contain a recognized file system.  Please make sure that all required file system drivers are loaded and that the volume isn’t corrupted.’  How should I proceed?

    Hi,
Have you tried connecting in a different computer?

Method 1: Check in safe mode

Check if the issue persists in safe mode.

For steps to open the computer in safe mode open the site mentioned below:

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Start-your-computer-in-safe-mode.

Method2: Check the drives for any errors

You may check the drives for any error.

    Refer the site mentioned below:

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Check-a-drive-for-errors.

Note: While checking a drive for errors, if bad sectors are found then the system tries to repair the sector. Any data available might be lost. Hence if you can access the drive, take a backup of data and then check the drives for errors.

Some hard drives have a security feature e.g, a password or settings which work with the hard drive app. Have you tried installing the hard disk software or drivers?

    Check a drive for errors
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Check-a-drive-for-errors
with this process it is possible that some data will be lost so do a backup first if you can open the hard drive.
