Why are my wireless download speeds to bad?

Chris_Hunter asks:

Guys, I’ve done everything that I can think of.

I’ve been having wireless download speed issue for a few weeks now. I was using a Linksys WRT54GS router that was working great for a long time but then, almost all of a sudden, my wireless speeds have drastically dropped to a snails crawl.

When I directly connected to my router via Ethernet speeds are blazing so I was thinking that since this is an older router, maybe the antennae are messed up, so I went a bout a new router, a Linksys E1200 Wireless N router.

No problem setting it up. Now, just so you know, there’s no problem with my Comcast modem. I’m able to plug directly into it and get massive download speeds. When I connect my new router to my modem and then connect to my new router via Ethernet, I get blazing download speeds.

But on the wireless, even with the new router? Slow, slow, slow!

I use µTorrent for downloading files and I regularly get 2.5mbps or greater download speeds when I’m connected via Ethernet. I used to get and least 1mbps download speeds via wireless, even with the old Linksys router but those speeds are nowhere to be found now, not even with the new router!!

The router is still in the same spot as it has always been! I have 2 laptops and 2 iPads and nothing has changed with them – the laptops have the same wireless network cards and all drivers are up to date.

I’m really stumped. I have no idea what else I can do. I’m almost to the point of setting up Ethernet ports in all of my rooms so that I can get the download speeds that I pay for in every room. This makes no sense to me.

Any advice and help you can give will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Chris

on which windows are you? boot into safe mode with networking and check if the download speeds increase or still remain the same.

can be driver problem upgrade Linksys E1200 Wireless N router driver and if does not work roll back to older firmware?

do internet test here
http://www.cfosspeed.de/speed-test/speed-test_en.htm

also this can be from your antimalware security tool, firewall…

If you are using a proxy server or VPN then dont use it..some times this reduces the speed of the internet…do check it out..

I actually figured out the problem. All that I had to do was go into my routers settings and change the security mode and also change what channel it was broadcasting on. The problem is totally fixed now. Thanks for all of your help!

I actually figured out the problem. All that I had to do was go into my routers settings and change the security mode and also change what channel it was broadcasting on. You need to log into your router (preferably wired) and go to your security settings – Wireless > Wireless Security – to change them to WPA2-Personal (my settings) and then go to your broadcast settings page – Wireless > Basic Wireless Settings – and change the channel. If you’ve never changed it before, it’s probably set to the default channel, and if you have a lot of wireless networks in your area all broadcasting on the same channel, they’re more than likely causing a lot of interference, affecting your wireless broadcasting. I have mine set to channel 10 and that works perfect for me. Just experiment with the channels to see which one helps give you the best download speed. I used Comcast’s speedtest site and speedtest.net to test my settings. Hope that helps. You can email me if you need to – chrishunter at gmail dot com – and I’ll help however I can! Later!

Charlie,

The original poster could have marked his question as resolved, but apparently did not. Thanks for pointing this out to us. I have marked the question as resolved for him.

make sure no devices are connecting to your network and forcing it to use 802.11b top speed of 11mbps

Avoid placing the routers on other devices that may interfere with the wireless signal.
