Why am I seeing an error when trying to access the hard drive on my Compaq Presario laptop and where can I find Windows 7 drivers?

Sri Swaminathan Vanarasi asks:

I recently started reusing my old Compaq laptop and when I try to open any of the hard disk drives I get an error:
“The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click to terminate the application.”

The operating system I was using was Windows XP. So I changed my operating system to Windows 7 and the error is gone. However, I couldn’t find any drivers for my laptop for Windows 7.

So please help me out to resolve the error OR help me find the drivers of Presario v3000 for Windows 7.

Enable Windows Update, to ask you before install. It will search for better drivers, and when you open windows update, you will ssee a list of the updates. See if there are any Driver updates.

The Manual way is looking at ur devices through the device manager, and googling the device name for drivers. The Devices which dont have drivers will have a yellow/red or other mark on their icon in the list.

Otherwise you can use Device Doctor, which is a software that scans your hardware and searches for drivers. This is easy, but not that effective :)

yeah ryan i already went through the device manager and most of the drivers are not installed and the compatible drivers of win 7 are not available on net:(:( wat to do??

What drivers are missing? There are 49 subversions of the v3000 in the US and 76 outside of the US as seen here http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/pfinder?cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&tool=&query=Presario+v3000

It appears this series was released prior to the release of Win7 and HP/Compaq does not have specific Win7 drivers although the drivers for Vista should work without a problem (they use the same driver model).

yeah i tried with drivers of windows vista but it is not compatible with my laptop:(:(

Hello, a reformatting/reinstall of windows XP should fix the problem. As I understand it, XP is not installed in laptop right? If XP is still installed, you could try running the SFC command or a repair:

repair:

http://pcsupport.about.com/od/operatingsystems/ss/instxprepair1.htm

install:

http://www.buildeasypc.com/sw/windows_xp.htm

Usually vista drivers work well in windows 7 but as you said, there is no drivers available even for vista.

Sri Swaminathan Vanarasi

i did reinstall the windows XP OS.. but the error continues.. but when i install windows 7 instead of XP their is no error..
and win vista drivers are available for my laptop model but are not compatible with windows 7

Hello, sometimes it can happen that there is some corruption in the installation disc. Only way to find out is this is your case, would be to try a different installation disc with same version of operating system.

Compaq is owned by HP. If you go to hp.com you should be able to download the drivers from there. If not, call them. 1-800-474-6836. They also have chat support as well.
