I am looking to get a full context understanding of the various mechanisms that make up the computer world with a focus on data accumulation. My current school focus reflects this but I find it lacks the depth, or perhaps, the density of what I need to understand fully, so I have been supplementing with outside resources.
Here is the problem, everything interests me, therefore one day I’ll watch a video on programming, the next, data mining, the next, something else…. So I was wondering if someone of your context could light a path for me, a general direction on what to focus on, in what order.
Or a link to an online education website.
I imagine this is a little out of the norm for a question, but outside of speaking to those who understand the industry, have been through the training already, I do not know how else to glimpse in to the future here.

May 30, 2012you are much eager to gain knowledge on computer. Let me tell you that computer is a vast subject… To suggest you something specific, I should know which field you are interested in.. If you want to learn computer as a subject, you won’t get much help from websites…. Like if you like to learn C language, go for some good books. I have a good stuff, published in makeuseof.com a few days ago…. These sites provide free online university level education on various subjects including computer science.. Chk them out… They might be helpful

May 31, 2012You definitely have to know at least one programming language. Start with that. There are a lot of things to know about the science industry. I suggest start with C or Java for some basic, straightforward programming.
Or you can join one of the online classes in coursera.org
I found this https://www.coursera.org/course/cs101
Although the date still says TBA, it’s worth waiting for.
If you want to focus more on data accumulation the focus on “How structured data works” part of the course.
Or you can also go to http://ocw.mit.edu/courses/electrical-engineering-and-computer-science/ and look for a material that suits you.
Hope that helps!

June 7, 2012Hi Tim,
I see what you want but I don’t know why. That is, in what context are you asking this question. The question itself is multidimensional and so will be the answer (if there is one single answer, that is). I have been a professor of IS and see that your question is related to academics. Perhaps you are writing your thesis or doing academic research. In either case, try to “refine” your question to make it more manageable. Be glad to help if that is what you need.
