What software can I use to automatically copy new files from my DropBox folder to another location?

Michael McKeivier asks:

I have been trying to organize the photos I take on my Droid to automatically upload to DropBox. This way it automatically syncs to my PC at home.

I’m looking for a sync or folder watch program that will automatically detect when new files are synced with DropBox from the Droid and copy them to a select folder on my PC. I’ve been reading a lot on your website and just was wondering what the best program was for my issue.

I dont understand.
Dropbox syncs the photos from your Droid to the dropbox folder on your PC.
So why would you sync the dropbox folder on your PC to another folder also on the PC.
I means that will be duplication.. :o

I think you mean you want to automatically move new files in your dropbox folder to a separate folder on your PC elsewhere – maybe for backup or archiving? You can just create a new folder and set up a sync using something like Microsoft Synctoy or any other Sync tool out there. So long as your Dropbox is correctly mapped on your PC and set up in the Sync software the two folders will stay synced.

But as Vipul correctly points out, you’re simply duplicating the files…is that what you wanted to do?

Basically yes it is duplicating them. I want to copy the new pictures that sync from my Dropbox into another folder Labeled (Picture Folder to Organize) for archiving proposes. I still want them backuped in my Dropbox but I also want them copied so that I can put them in the right folder through Picasa. I just want something that’s automated so I don’t have think about doing it and remembering the last group of pictures I moved. Thanks for you help!

I see where you’re coming from Mike, but you’d do better to let Picasa index your Dropbox instead! Basically, Dropbox is intended to be used as a “normal” folder, and the backups are made on the Dropbox website. Simply duplicating things on the hard disc is unnecessary.

I’m assuming you are on a windows machine. You can use a program called DeltaCopy which is basically an rsync wrapper. You install it set it to run at selected intervals, using the Windows task scheduler, and forget all about it. You can find the utility and its documentation here:

Looking at the comments below I do not know if this will help or not, but have you heard of IFTTT (If this then that)? The may have something that might help you. Just a thought, maybe it will help.

Use Microsoft SyncToy, use it to sync your dropbox picture folder and the folder where you want to copy new pictures, but make sure it is a one way sync, so that you can delete content from your dropbox folder but still can have it in your local folder.
