I and my friend were disputing what is the best video player. I say that is Gom Player and he says that is VLC. What do you think that is the best video player?

I find Potplayer is better than VLC. Better playlist interface. However Both Potplayer and VLC can sometimes struggle with large playlists (10,000+). I found that UMplayer can handle large playlists the best but Potplayer is the best overall.

I've been using The Kmplayer for more than 6 years. It is a bit heavy nowadays bust still plays virtually anything. If you had to rank the 3 of them (GOM and VLC as well), how would you do it?

VLC media player is the swiss army knife of media players. It is a must have but it is not necessarily the best. Paid ones like Cyberlink PowerDVD and free ones like Winamp, KM Player etc. are also good. Be sure to check out Tomahawk.

The best video player is the one that "gets the job done". If you are satisfied with GOM then stick with it. All the players have their perks, strengths and weak spots.

Personally I use MPC-HC with the madVR renderer. It does take some setup and testing but you will get great image quality out of it. One drawback is that madVR can't render all the stuff MPC-HC can play so every now and then I have to switch renderer to playback a file.

All in all doing something "better" doesn't necessarily mean being the best choice.

"Best" is a subjective term. VLC. and GOM Player are both excllent without a doubt. VLC is extraordinarily flexible (player, server, converter, multi-interface, multi platform). GOM Player is also a very fine player, arguably with a better default interface/skin. KM Player is also excellent, and some people still swear by Media Player Classic or MPlayer.

VideoLan VLC player is good, but has become resource hungry and some mp4's do not play very well in VLC. Media Player Classic-Home Cinema (MPC-HC) performs and behaves better while giving similar features, functions, and format compatibility. http://mpc-hc.org/

The other suggested media players are quite good as well, so they may be worth trying out to make sure you find what you like.
