What are the requirements to make a website like MakeUseOf.com?
Question by shaarky Gameranger /

Huge fan of MakeUseOf. What do we have to do in order to make a website like MakeUseOf.com? How many people do we need? What types of people do we need? And can we earn from such websites? Thanks.

Build a site around its content, providing something new, unique, and interesting to potential readers. The platform, domain, and hosting are secondary to content, so think about the kind of niche you want to fill and either produce the content yourself or hire writers to do it for you.

The most important and rare need is useful content that a reader needs.
Other than that the requirements are less and can be easily purchased.
A domain name: like example.com, makeuseof.com (Prices almost 10 dollars per year)
A webhosting account: Usually can be purchased for 5 dollars a month for a virtually unlimited storage.

In my opinion, the whole internet thing is just a fad. Like those crazy automobiles or whatever people are calling them these days…

Just kidding! I think the number one thing you need is content. As to how original that content has to be, well, there are tons of websites saying the exact same thing. So really, you just need to present the content in an interesting way that people will enjoy. Start with content, and then work on the technical aspects of running a site. Jan Fritsch mentioned WordPress.com, which is a great place to host a blog for free until you feel that it’s worth investing more money.

    Have fun!

    1. A domain name
    2. A website hosting service
    3. Web developer who will develop the website
    4. Writers (Very Important)

Designing and developing your website: If you want to have your favorite design and impress your visitors then you will need to design and develop your website by you own or some vender (Based on markets it prices 500 to 1000s of dollars.
Although if you just need a website and do not want everything as you want. you can install wordpress or joomla for free and thousands of free templates are available for free and for purchase for both wordpress and joomla.
    That is all you need.
But remember you will have a long journey for your SEO, attracting users and monetizing your website. And the most important factor for all these is useful content. Something that is made by you not copied from someone else’s work

I guess the most important thing to have is original content that addresses a certain or a limited number of interests. From there on it’s all growth over time.

You should not copy other peoples content.
You should avoid linking to external content regularly.
You should narrow down the content you provide to certain categories.

You can start with a simple and free hosted WordPress blog all by yourself and if people like your content your number of visitors will grow, the demand for new content and therefor the demand for more staff.

It’s hard to narrow down the type of people you’ll need later on but basically it’s someone “running the site”, looking into what people want to read and what they usually skip over, read and reply to comments etc.
Obviously you will need people creating content who at least have basic skills in writing articles and can use a word processing program (and their grammar correction feature).

If and once you start hosting your own site and system or want to implement new features you will need someone doing the technical work.
