What are advantages and disadvantages of upgrading from Hotmail to Outlook? After upgrading, if a user sends email to the Hotmail ID, is the email received on upgraded Outlook?

    Main disadvantage of outlook are
    1. you will wonder if you are working on beta (sometime clicks doest work and you'll have to reload the page)
    2. I was expecting an important official mail and the servers are down from morning
    check for yourself now

If you do not require IMAP or Exchange ActiveSync support, certainly upgarde to outlook.com for it's clean un-cluttered metro style UI, unlimited storage space for mails and attachments (unlimited mailbox size, will automatically increase in size when you reach the limit), tight integration with Skydrive giving 7GB cloud space and allowing large file size attachment and access to Office Web Apps (Word, Excel and Powerpoint Web App) on the same integrated interface. All this free and backed up by Microsoft. If you run a business, you can even configure a domain with outlook.com and have upto 500 users free. MakeUseOf recently rn an article on that http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/outlook-handles-email-domain-hosting/ . So I personally think that the advantages outweighs the disadvantages to make the shift. I have been using it without any hassle. Do not worry, they also have a outlook.com email client from Microsoft at Google Play for your Android system. :)

@Raja lol s/he only asked for advantage/disadvantage from HOTMAIL to Outlook.com. Hotmail didn't have IMAP before either.

PS: Microsoft plans to support IMAP4. Because it's (for Microsoft) a brand new protocol lol it will take a while but they somewhere wrote in a blog post about their future plans.

I never compared it with hotmail in the first place. I mentioned about the current status of no support for IMAP and just highlighted the advantages of outlook.com. :)

        Sunil,

If you upgrade your hotmail account to the outlook.com account, I presume it will still be the same email ID that will remain.

However, alternatively you can keep the hotmail account as it is untouched and create a new outlook.com account. Then in the hotmail setting, you can enable the mail forwarding and define your new outlook.com account there. So, every mail that you receive in your hotmail will automatically get forwared to your outlook.com email id.

Mail address won't be upgraded. You would need to manually create a @outlook.com mail account - if you want to. So the only advantage/disadvantage is the new interface.
