Michael C asks:
I could have sworn that I read an article on MakeUseOf about a website that would automatically email family/friends/whomever if you don’t check-in after a certain time (assuming you’re missing, or die). I tried searching, but nothing comes up. Help?

October 19, 2011I hunted around, but the closet thing I could find on MakeUseOf was this:

I did find a few sites that seem to do what you ask, though not exactly in the manner you describe (i.e. checking in to confirm you’re, well, not dead).
http://ifidie.org/
http://www.assetlock.net/
https://www.mywebwill.com/
And there actually appear to be countless more – those are just the first few that I came upon that appeared legit. Please do some more research before using any such service, as I haven’t used them myself.
Wouldn’t it be more appropriate if you test the service first?
October 19, 2011Sure, I’ll just go grab a rope and a chair…

(My)Space Oddity
November 4, 2011Not exactly the same thing, but there’s this site My Death Space which locks and archives the profiles of deceased MySpace users.
Sadly, it gained headlines numerous times when a number of MySpace users committed suicide. At least one incident, tragically, was related to cyber-bullying.
