Is there a way to view wireless LAN connection history?

Julia Nastase asks:

I would like to know if there is a way to discover an IP address that was connected on my LAN one week ago. Is there a software that can do it? Please help!

I don’t believe so, not unless you have special logging software set up.

Even if you did: Discovering the IP address won’t help you, anyway. You’d see an IP address like “192.168.0.92″, which was the IP address your router assigned to that device. When the device uses another Wi-Fi network, it gets a different local IP address.

If you ever see 192.168.0.92 on your network again, it may well be a different device — local IP addresses are temporary.

There are a few routers that will show you the name that a person gave the device along with the ip address the router gave to the device. Some D-Link routers will show you on the dashboard when you check the settings. Check the settings of the router to see if it shows you more than just the ip addresses used, otherwise it would not be very easy to find out which device is given a certain ip address, only which ip addresses have been used. Even then, some routers will only show the range of ip addresses that are allowed to be used, ie. 192.168.0.3-192.168.0.50. Like Chris said, sometimes devices change ip addresses when connecting back. I would keep a check on your computer for devices connected to your network. If you are using Windows, click on the Start button, then either Connect to (win vista or 7), or Computer, and scroll down the left side to where it says Network. Devices allowed to viewed on the network will show there, and you will find the name given to the device, and if they aren’t smart enough, will use their real name for their device, ie. Dalsan-PC.

http://www.makeuseof.com/answers/how-can-i-determine-what-computer-is-using-a-particular-ip-address-on-my-network/

This was originally meant for Mac OS, but has some usable information for Windows as well. It should help you out with what you need.

Most routers will have logs that will provide connection history (amongst many other things). There are a few hitches though:
1. They are usually very verbose, and difficult to read
2. The logs are limited in size and, depending on how busy the network is, the relevant items may have been overwritten (although if you are on a home network, this is less likely to be an issue).
3. The IP address by itself is unlikely to be of any use, as it is assigned dynamically by the router, so it only identifies the machine _during that session_. However, the logs may show you the MAC address (also known as Hardware address), and this _is_ unique to each network card, so you should be able to match it.
4. If you have access to the computer in question (the one that may have been used), then the information may still be there. Have a look at http://www.nirsoft.net for some software utilities that allow you to probe WiFi information including some settings of the sort you’re after.
