Why can’t I view folders on my hard drive?

Imar Dela cruz asks:

How can I open folders that have been force-hidden by my hard drive? I have unchecked the hide folder option but they still don’t appear, I can’t view my files but my PC says that the folders are still taking up space on the drive.

Maybe those folders are protected by OS. If so, uncheck “Hide protected operating system files” option (though Windows recommends to keep it checked).
Would be a good ideea to give us more details…

on “Start” –>Run–>type cmd and click on OK.
if your hard drive as G:
Enter this command: attrib -h -r -s /s /d g:\*.*
Then check if your real files will be shown

do a scan with treesize to see bof files on your pc

You can use WinRAR archiver or 7-Zip to view those files.
Use them to browse your hard drive, all files [hidden / system] can be viewed.
I use them when viruses / trojans hide your files and ceate their own folder inside.

The files may be protected files or or “hidden” by a means other than windows hidden file system

Were the files on a seperate partition? if they were, can you see the partition.
Click on Start then right click on ‘Computer’
Click on Manage then Disk Management.
If you see a drive/partition without a drive letter assigned to it (except for the windows 7 reserved partition which is only 100MB) right click on it and assign a letter.
If this was the case you should see your files.

Hello, has your computer being acting up lately? I would first start by scanning your drive for malware/virus. Either of them can cause this.

That may be due to a virus. I had such a virus on my pendrive. Use the software “USB Show” (http://ldc.mx/usbshow.php) The software will find and unhide all the folders.

maybe the folders were superhidden (hidden as system folders)

open command prompt
navigate to the hard drive
the run the command ‘attrib -h -s /s /d’
all folders will be unhidden, make sure you hide the sensitive folders as soon as possible
