What version of Linux will run on my Dell C610?

I have a Dell C610 with Windows XP Service Pack 3, 1.2 GHz Pentium and 768MB of usable memory. I tried to install Ubuntu 11.10 but it did not work. Is there some other Linux package that can run on this relatively old laptop? I like Windows XP but would really prefer Ubuntu.

There are a couple of options you could go for, and if you really like Ubuntu then I'd recommend a lightweight Ubuntu distribution which will provide access to the Ubuntu repositories (for excellent software availability) without too much resource hogging.

There's Lubuntu - http://lubuntu.net/ - which uses the LXDE desktop environment to provide a lightweight alternative to Unity/GNOME.

There's also Xubuntu - http://xubuntu.org/ - which uses XFCE as its primary desktop environment, which is similar to LXDE in its lightweight nature.

If you're especially fond of Unity then you could always try Unity 2D, which can be installed from Ubuntu by typing the following into Terminal (console):

    sudo apt-get install unity-2d

Otherwise I'd recommend a Debian-based distro (what Ubuntu is derived from) for similar compatibility with software. There's some awesome lightweight Linux distros like crunchbang - http://crunchbanglinux.org. For more ideas check out this article. Hope this helps.
