Which updates for Windows XP continue after its support was discontinued by Microsoft?

Are there categories of updates which stop and some that continue?

Please clarify which stop and which continue.

Windows Embedded and POS systems get the updates and support until 2019, but there is a registry hack to get these updates on a regular XP system. However, these updates are risky on consumer XP systems as they are not tested nor created for them; you could lose functionality, features, and possibly worse due to this fact. I wouldn't try the registry hack and then expect regular security updates that work when they aren't meant for said system. It would be like having a damaged wheel and only patching the tires; issues will continue, and may become bigger issues later.

Software updates, however, are different. Windows Update most likely won't help, but you can use Microsoft update and software websites to check for these updates. Security updates and hotfixes are discontinued.

For the average consumer, all updates for XP have stopped. There are still updates for embedded systems (POS terminals and similar systems) and for businesses and governments which are paying big bucks for extended support (such as the IRS).

Thanks. I received an update of 'malicious software removal' dated June 2014 , which caused me to come with this query. Please tell , which category of updates continue and which category have stopped for consumer. If i remember correctly , i had read that some category of updates are valid after end of support by Microsoft.

Microsoft's Malicious Software Removal Tool may still show up for XP users as it is a relatively generic tool to find and remove what Microsoft considers to be the top current malware threats to Windows systems. Since it has never been specifically coded to run only on XP systems, it is possible that it will continue to be available for those still holding on to XP beyond EOL even though the protection it offers is minimal.

The only XP software to be updated now is ATM software.

There are no more updates for Windows XP . Microsoft did release one update, but that was because of very unusual circumstances, and it's unlikely that they will release any more.
