The sound is muted with an X in the speaker icon. I use Windows 7.

Click on the speaker icon. In the slider that appears, there should be another similar icon. Click on that to toggle mute/unmute. Depending on the model of your laptop, there may be a key or key combination on the keyboard to handle the same function. Check your documentation.

Try clicking on the Volume icon, and Windows would automatically try to diagnose the issue and fix it. If that does not work, go to the device Manufacturer's website and download the latest drivers for Audio and installing those and check.

Re-Click the X and it should disappear, then you should get your sound back. Then make shore that the sound bar isn't all the way down my old system ran Windows 7 and I had that issue all the time. If all else fails turn it off and on again.

If you have an Acer computer, there may be a keyboard shortcut using Fn and a button with the sound icon on it.

Good point Alan, "no drive = no sound".
Start button, type audio in the search box and see if the result list an audio device.

You must have a Function button with which you can mute/unmute the sound. If you're on an Acer it should be the Function Button+ F8. You can also click the sound icon from the taskbar and then click on the speaker icon, it will unmute your sound.

Click the speaker icon, which will reveal a volume bar. Set the volume to something nonzero.

Another method you can try is to open Windows Mobiity Center from Start Menu > Accessories > Mobility Center or simply press the Windows Key + X button. Under the volume section you can uncheck the Mute checkbox and adjust the volume by using the slider.

There must be a key combination for that. Try using Fn + F keys or Fn + Arrow keys.
