What is wmiprvse.exe and why are to instances of it running on my system?

What is wmiprvse.exe and why would 2 different instances of it be running in the Processes tab of Windows Task Manager?

    Wmiprvse.exe is microsoft service but virus and malware can disguise themselves under this name like W32/Sasser (wmiprvsw.exe)

    Wmiprvse.exe is built into Windows and is part of the WMI (Windows Management Instrumentation) suite. This is a collection of tools that monitor your PCs performance with the aim of notifying you if there's a problem. It's fairly normal to have more than one instance of it running, as each copy runs under one account, and for this purpose, the user account is different from the system account network service etc.
