Is there a way to tether my Android tablet to my phone for free?

I have a Samsung Infuse (AT&T – unlocked) and a Le Pan Android tablet. I would rather not pay for WiFI tethering on my phone plan. USB tethering isn’t possible because there is no USB port on the tablet. Has anyone found a free or inexpensive way to tether?

if you can connect your phone and use it as a modem on your laptop.

you can use your laptop
as a wifi hotspot and your tablet can connect to it.
use connectify to do this:
