Why are my speakers too loud?

Jonathan Nash asks:

USB speakers too loud, even at level 1. Especially with Windows Media Center. Using Windows 7 Home Professional. Speakers are Logitech S-150. Others have the same problem, but Logitech isn’t helping with solution (see:

have you tried setting your speakers to say 100% (turn the volume controller on your speakers to the max) and then setting your system sound to say 10-20?
And try this as well: go to Control Panel->Sound, click on Communications tab and check Do Nothing, so that the system does not interfere with its boring “feature” of normalizing the volume all the time.
