How can I share the Internet on two different IP ranges in Windows XP?

abdul asks:

I have a reliance broadband internet. In my office there is total 6 PCs. I connected them all with a network switch and switch connected with the modem.

My problem is that in my network only 1 PC can connect to internet. IP address is set to automatic. All PCs are getting IP, but only one PC which connects first can connect to the internet. I tried with manual IP, but no internet access. Then how will I share one internet on my network to use all 6 PCs?

Thanks in advance!

My first assumption would be that your modem is locked to the MAC address of your first computer which can connect.

If your computer has two network interfaces you can connect it form the modem to your computer, from the computer to the switch and share the internet using Internet Connection Sharing.

However the problem with a ‘shared’ setup is that the computer that does have internet needs to be turned on all the time.

I believe the best option is to get an inexpensive router which can allows you to clone the computers MAC to it’s wan interface. Then connect the routers WAN to the modem and it’s LAN to the switch.

Make sure that your modem is connected to the WAN port (usually either the first or last port on the device or labeled as WAN) of the switch or swap out the switch with a router. If you go with the router, you shouldn’t even need to clone MAC addresses for it to work; your ISP is normally only concerned with the external MAC address of your modem and doesn’t really care what is sitting on the inside interface.Even if all of your computers have only 1 ethernet port, you can still use ICS but the device must always be on; there is no requirement for it to have multiple network interfaces. You just have to set up the other computers to use that one computer as the default gateway to get to the outside world.

In general you are right about the MAC address but forums suggest that the ISP supplied modem of Reliance Broadband does lock the internal MAC address.

I agree with Mike :-)
What you need to do is get yourself a router designed for cable broadband.
Connect them as Mike suggested i.e.

Modem->WAN Port Router
Switch->LAN Port Router
PCs->Switch

Sometimes you will get away without having to clone the mac address to the WAN port of the router. Also be aware when buying a router that not all routers allow you to do this.

Just my two cents.
Happy networking :-)

once a system is connected to via the modem and other systems can’t dial this since it will be busy. Best thing is to connect the modem to a system and share the internet connection to that entire workgroup via that system.
