If my memory serves me right, I believe the files and folder structures has to be set correctly.. as in the same way a memory card would look like out of a MS Duo card pulled from a Sony camera. Along with FAT.

I glanced at that from my brother's manual.

Also, you cannot do USB to HDMI. Consider getting a WDTV Live and connect it to your TV, then connect your hard drive to your WDTV Live.

You can't. That's a hard drive, and HDMI is a video connection. Connect it through USB and format it as FAT32. Bear in mind, TVs can't read most video formats either, so you'll always have trouble trying to playback anything. Better option is to just plug your computer into your TV and use the tv as a secondary monitor to play movies on.

check Sony HDTV manual regarding Hard drive compatibility, concerning cable if supported by TV HDMI 1.0 to HDMI 1.2a uses the EIA/CEA-861-B video standard, HDMI 1.3 uses the CEA-861-D video standard, and HDMI 1.4 uses the CEA-861-E video standard

most TVs with a USB option play the FAT32 format by default. If your hard drive is formatted with NTFS or something else, your TV will not be able to see it.

also perhaps you have to check on your TV “Home” -> “System Settings” -> “Recording Set-up” -> “HDD Registration”

if your TV has wifi then try serviio
