I want software that can set any file format to open with portable software by default. For example, I want PDF files to open with the portable Foxit Reader instead of Adobe Reader. How can I do this?

Using your of a .pdf file, right click on the pdf file, click properties, on the General tab under Opens with: click Change... Now browse to your portable executable program and click OK. Now whenever you open a pdf file, it will open with that program.

Hello, What is your operating system?  For this to work, your usb drive/flashdrive has to be plug in in an almost permanent fashion in your computer.  Remember that portable programs are there to be used with portable media but they can also be stored in a harddrive but that defeats the purpose of being portable.  You can set the default program to them by doing the following:

    windows 7/vista:

    -- click on start
    -- control panel
-- on left hand side column, click on Programs
    -- click on default programs
-- click on make a file type open in an specific program
-- select the file extension you want to set by clicking on it
    -- click on change Program
-- make sure to checkmark Always use the selected program to open this kind of file
    -- click on browse
-- navigate to flashdrive/disk and select the portable program
    -- click on ok

    XP Pro:
    -- open windows explorer
    -- click on tools
    -- click on Folder options
-- click on File Types tab
-- scroll until you find extension you want to change program for
    -- click on change
-- make sure to check mark Always use the selected program to open this kind of file next to browse button
    -- click on browse
-- navigate to where portable program is
    -- click on open
    -- click on ok
    -- click on close
