Why does search in Vista fail to initialize?

Greg asks:

When I type a word in the ‘start search’ box on the Start menu or the Search box in a Windows Explorer window and hit enter nothing happens and I get this message, ‘Search failed to initillize’ at the top.
What is causing this? I have updated the index and done a Rebuild several times but I still get the same problem.
