Why can I only see my screensaver when I connect my PC to my TV with a HDMI cord?

Abdullah asks:

I plugged up my PC to my TV and all I can see is the screensaver and the mouse head. And I can also hear everything I pull up, but I just can’t see it.

I connected my hp laptop to my toshiba tv, the only display I can get from laptop is just the laptop screen saver, when I change to something on the computer the laptop remains with the screen saver picture.
