Why does my Samsung Galaxy Tab not power on?

Joe asks:

My Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 suddenly won’t turn on.

I used it just yesterday and the battery was charged. Now when I try to turn it on nothing happens. I tried to connect it to power via USB and the socket, but nothing. Please help!

Joe,

try to hold down the power button for 10 to 15 seconds.

I had the same thing happen to me just the other day and it miraculously worked. Maybe you had some power consuming apps running or the WiFi and the battery went flat.

This works!!!

Glad it does! If you own the Galaxy Tab, also watch out for the oily spot on the display. Appears to be a known issue and I just became a victim of that. :(

Can you pls clarify on the ‘oily spot’?

Holding power button does nothing for me.  Nor does another forum which suggests holding both the PWR and VOLDOWN.

Oh, and thanks. :)

April 19, 2012
Tina

Hey Mike,

If the power button trick doesn’t work, then you probably have a bigger issue. Maybe the battery is damaged. The good news is, it can be exchanged. If your device has warranty, it might not even cost you anything.

Regarding the oily spot, it’s underneath the glass, it looks like a spot of oil and it expands when the device gets warmer. It can disappear temporarily when the device cools down. I turned mine in for repair and that was covered by the warranty.

hi all, i was also desperate with my galaxy tab 10.1. I tried suggestion to hold power button and in the same time touching the screen for 30 seconds. I was of course pluged to charger, because my battery was empty. So i that trick with touching and holding worked only after 5th time. So please try couple times, try to touch and hold screen first and then also click and hold power button, or other way round. Just be patient.

Hi :)
my tab doesn’t power on too. but holding down the power on key doesn’t work fo me. I have small kids, so maybe the display had some spots on it. what did u do in that case? You said something about oily spots…
Thanks :)

June 26, 2012
Tina

Lucy,

The oily spot has nothing to do with your kids or with the tablet not booting. It’s a manufacturing issue that looks like an oily spot underneath the glass. Sorry!

Thank you – it works. I haven’t used it for 3 days and had it charged but nothing. I cleaned the display and held down the power keys until I saw a flicker of light. I hope they fix this in the next =version – right now, I wouldn’t recommend the Tab.

Thought i had held it down long enough, i guess not… alot of ppl throw the phrase life saver around but seriously, you are! I was about to go postal on the whole city!! after having my ceptic tank backing up into my house for a month waiting on a permit to replace the drain field, having to replace my fuel pump and maf airflow sensor after my car left me dead on the side of the road forcing me to push it a quarter mile uphill, alone, with 2 small children in the back, getting robbed of everything 3 times over 2 consecutive days forcing me and my family onto the streets and no homeless shelter taking us in, and about 1000 other things in my life going wrong, this was the last straw! I lost it, but I calmed down and took a breath and found this page, said screw it and gave it another shot and viola!! THANK YOU SOOOOOO MUCH!! I’m sure my neighbors thank you too bc I can shut up now and get on with picking the pieces of my broken life back up and ducktaping them back together to weather the next storm that i’m sure is right around the corner… Thanks again friend!!

i dropped mine from about 1m up and it went through a light rain a few days ago. It was working fine straight after that, although the power button didn’t work all the time and it kept restarting, however it was all working good until now, where I just fully recharged it and the battery sign was showing but it wont turn on! Please help!

May 20, 2012
Tina

JJ,

If holding the power button for 30 seconds doesn’t work even though the device was charged or is currently connected to a power source, then I don’t know what else you could try. A service technician may be your last chance. Maybe a loose connection finally broke and can be repaired easily.

If it still has warranty, return it and say it stopped working. You might have to pay for a repair, even with warranty. Nothing much else you can do if the tablet won’t turn on after being dropped. Sounds like hardware damage.

November 11, 2011

Hey Josh,

only saw your comment now. Could it be that the battery has run out? Try charging it for at least 15 minutes, then try again.

November 11, 2011
Milly

How come mine doesn’t work? Held the power button for like 2mins but still doesn’t work! :( reading everyone’s comments that it worked is making me so frustrated! :(

January 27, 2012
Tina

Sorry Milly!

Did you try all the other tips I gave? Maybe it needs to be charged. Do that over night, then try again.

If it still doesn’t work, I’m afraid you need to take it to the shop to have it checked and maybe repaired.

Michel,

connect the device to the battery charger, maybe it just ran flat. After giving it a boost for at least a few minutes (I recommend 15 – 30 minutes!), try again and hold the button until you see the screen come on. Do let us know if it worked. Thanks!

If it’s only a month old, I would recommend to make use of Samsung’s warranty and take it back to the shop for a repair. Maybe the battery didn’t just go flat, but broke.

If it’s not a low battery, maybe the battery broke? The good news is that it can be replaced.

I just want to say thanks. I woke up this morning and my house was awfully quiet. My Tab is my alarm clock, the sun was too bright, and so I rolled over to check the time and my system was dead. This has happened to us everyday for the last 3 days.  We are closing all applications before closing down.  This tablet is only 19 days old.  Why would we have this problem.

Your method worked the first 3 times, this last time we had to touch the screen AND hold down the power button.  Should we return this $500 tablet?

Tina

Tracey,

it could be an issue with either the software or the hardware. To exclude software issues, I would try to restore the tablet. Before you do that, backup your data as a reset will delete everything, including your apps and personal preferences.

Once you have everything backed up, go to > Settings > Privacy > Factory data reset and choose to > Reset tablet.

If you still have the issue after the factory reset, chances are that the root of the issue is beyond your reach. In that case I would definitely return the tablet or have it fixed or exchanged.

Good luck!

it din’t work on mine, i don’t even see a sign that it is charging after i left it to drain overnight. what will i do?

Tina

Try charging it over night and/or hold the button down longer than 30 seconds.

If nothing else helps, take it to the shop. If it’s still under warranty, Samsung or the shop will fix it for free. Otherwise, you’ll have to bite the bullet and see what it costs to have it repaired. Maybe it’s a simple fix, just ask.

NO ONE REALLY HAS ANSWERED “WHY” IT DISPLAY DOESN’T TURN ON.  You have only answered how to turn back on.  Holding power button for 15 seconds is doing a hard reset.  You only have to do this when the system crashes!!!  Where’s the solution to fix this system crash problem?? If no one has the real solution, we all have to voice up to Samsung so they can fix this problem as soon as possible!  This tablet is not cheap compared to other Android tablet, they must resolve this problem!  They cannot simply expect us to restart the device all the time!  What if the power button doesn’t turn on while you have some work in the tablet???  Hard reset would kill whatever you’ve been working on your tablet!! Please let us have our voice lifted so Samsung will hear!!

Tina

You’re right, the method I described is a hard reset, which typically has to be done after a system crash.

I’m not sure what causes the crash and it’s probably a different cause on different tablets. It only happened to me twice in half a year, so I don’t consider it a massive issue.

If it happens more often to you, it might be caused by the incompatibility of some apps. I’m not sure you can hold Samsung responsible for that as this mainly is a problem of Google Android.

OK – freaky….worked for me too. Any idea why it happens?

Tina

Unfortunately I don’t and it may be different causes for different users.

Note that when the tablet turns off due to low battery, you also have to
hold the power button for a few seconds to turn it back on. However,
it won’t turn on without being charged and you should see the battery icon when trying to charge it in the turned
off state.

In most of the cases reported here, I presume low battery was not the cause for the shut-down. So the tablet must have crashed and there is a number of possible reasons for that: general Android hiccup, app incompatibilities, hardware issues (too hot?) etc.

Accessing the Android crash log would be one way to find out. I have not
looked into how this can be done, though. For me the issue only
occurred once out of the blue and ever since the device only turned off
due to low battery.

I am also having the same probelm – it refuses to power on. I bought this from Verizon and they were obviously very “motivated” to sell this to me. At the same time they sold me an IPhone.  Wouldn’t you think they would consider the fact that getting an IPad would have involved only one learning curve? One of their sales reps assured me that there almost as many apps for the Galaxy 10 as there were for the IPad. Really??? Like many Galaxy 10 owners, I regret buying it.

Tina

I totally agree that buying an iPhone and an Android tablet in parallel is kind of pointless. Whoever recommended this to you didn’t do a good job.

Personally, I love my Galaxy Tab and I do not regret buying it at all! Can’t imagine buying Apple products anytime soon.

Make sure it’s really hooked up to the charger. Let it charge over night and then good luck.

Not sure what type of phone you have, but it should have a on/off button. Did you try to hold it for 15 to 30 seconds while recharging?

The tab just keeps on looping the reliance logo screen and the reliance tune which is so annoying. both the power buton and volume control doesn`t work as well during this process and so i have to remove and replace the battery to shut it off. KINDLY HELP..

susendeep dutta

Charge your tablet for the time which it takes to fully charge it,as might be mentioned in the manual. If this doesn’t helps, then contact Reliance for this and if it’s under warranty, you may ask for replacement.

mine will not charge at all? do you have any advice ? thanks

Bruce Epper

Had something look similar to this with an HP TouchPad. Plugged it in for about 10 minutes, then hit the power button to get it to start from sleep, completely powered off the device (hold power button for it to shut off) and let it fully charge. Took about 2 hours. Unplugged it from the charger, restarted it and haven’t had an issue with it since. It appears that this only happens on the TouchPad when the battery runs out when in sleep mode. Might be a similar effect on your device.

We got a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. I’ve had it for a few days now. I’m having issues with it turning on even though it is fully charged. I hold down the power button, tried the power button with volume up and no luck unless I have it plugged in. Held it for 10, 12 and 30 seconds even a few minutes and nothing. So as long as it is plugged in on the charger it will work with holding power button. The minute I unplug it goes dead. Any suggestions on how to get it to stay on not on the charger?

Tina

Carrie,

It sounds like the battery is broken. I’m afraid I don’t know what you could do. I would recommend returning the tablet to where you bought it for repair. Maybe it’s covered under the warranty.

Thank you very much Tina, it worked great for my GALAXY Note ! (meaning it’s not only for the Tabz). tit is only 1 month old and I was planning to take it to the Customer Care for warranty. I was like …. that’s cool, thanks to you and to this forum, the 10 seconds trick was the solution that worked.

Others, I think you can try it on all Samsung Galaxy products
Cheers

I got the same tablet less then 24 hours ago. it is fully charged and it was doing fine. i went to go on it it would not turn on. i left it on charge for another 10 mins and it turned on. then just this morning (after being on charge all night) it wont turn on again. I have tried to plug it into the charger, into the docking station and even into the computer and none of these work. and it is not the charger that is broken because it was working last night. I feel your pain buddy

it didn’t worked for me tina. my battery though was drained out and i tried the advice from a different blog to turn it on while touching the screen and it worked however it turned off again because the battery is drained when i tried to charge it while it’s turned on using the adapter its not working but when i connect it to a laptop it works well laptop red the device so do you think its a problem with my adapter?

Tina

It could be the adapter or the cable. You could go to a store, share your suspicion and ask to try a new one before buying. If it’s not the adapter, it could still be the battery.
