How can I run a website from my home?

I want to make a small website mainly for citizens of my city. I want to turn my computer itself into a server (as in dedicated Host).

The configuration of the computer would be like 1 GB of RAM, 500 GB Hard Disk (or an external 1 TB Hard disk), Core 2 Duo processor.

I surfed the net to find out something about XAMMP, but didn’t understand it correctly. So is there any software that would automatically turn my computer into a server or web host (what is the right term?) easily and make it eligible for hosting a WordPress blog or even Joomla CMS?

Thank You!

I think you would be better off by signing with one of the cheaper web hosts out there.

The thing is it's possible to host the website on your own web server / computer however it requires that you're well familiar with server configs. Setting up everything up wont be hard, but troubleshooting stuff that doesn't work will. You may ultimately end up spending a lot more time than you're willing to allocate for the project.

I think it's not worth it.

Hi try download the Opera Unite software and install it
    http://labs.opera.com/downloads/

now you are running a web server on your machine and just need few minutes to configure local file folders that you want to share with others over the internet.

Start the Opera Web browser (its also you web server) and enable the Opera Unite service from the lower left corner. Now double click the File Sharing link and select the folder whose content you want to share on the web. Any file or folder inside this folder can now be accessed over the internet – you can either use a public URL or specify a password for private sharing.

    you can try also http://rejetto.com/hfs/
It also differs from classic web servers because it’s very easy to use and runs “right out-of-the box”. You can access your remote files, over the network and HFS has been successfully tested with Wine under Linux.

    with XAMPP
    1) Downoad XAMPP
    2) after the installation you should see a command prompt which say “ Should I add shortcuts to the startmenu/desktop? (y/n): ” if you want the program to add a short-cut to the desktop and start menu type “y” and press enter

    3) now you should see “Should I locate the XAMPP paths correctly? Should I proceed? (y/x=exit setup): ” make sure you enter y” now n the next command make sure you type “n”

    4) then press enter and press enter again so now you should see a list and make sure that you type 3 and press enter, then once you press enter you should see the dilaog again and this time make sure you press 1 and enter then you should see the “XAMPP Control Panel” so now just exit this command prompt and go back to the control panel

    5) okay so now start apache, start MYSQL and finally start PHP once you have done those steps so you can test your server by visiting http://localhost/security/xamppsecurity.php and you should see a screen with a logo of xampp and pick your language and that it is you have your own server running

6)to upload go to my computer click on the C: Drive or the drive there you installed XAMPP and once your in the drive where you install XAMPP —-> you should see a XAMPP folder click on it and go to htdocs and delete everything in the folder and move your webpage make sure you rename your webpage to index.html
