I am currently running the consumer preview of Windows 8 and I would like to know if I can go back to Windows 7 without damaging my data? Thanks.

win 8 is upgraded version of win 7, so your movement is through downgrade therefore you have to take a back, but do you know that without taking a backup you can make clean install of windows 7 for this all your data is in other drive than "C" (i assumed that your system root folder is "C") then make a clean install of windows 7 by just formatting only "C" drive and let the other partition as it is. the drawback is that you will lose all your software in win8 system you have to install it again

This process to downgrade windows 8 to windows 7 depends entirely on how you have installed Windows 8. If you have installed Windows 8 by using the upgrade option, then unfortunately, the only way for you is to re-install Windows 7 (or any other OS). Format the system drive where Windows 8 is installed and then install Windows 7 on that same partition. Please note that formatting any partition will delete all the data (all files) and settings. Therefore before formatting, its recommended to take a backup of your precious data to external hard drive or to cloud storage. If you are formatting only one partition, then before doing so, you can move the files from that partition to some other partition (drive). This will remove Windows 8 and install Windows 7 on your system.Though this way to downgrade windows 8 to windows 7 could be risky!!

If you have installed Windows 8 on a separate partition, then follow the below guide to downgrade Windows 8 to Windows 7. You need to follow each and every step carefully.

For this tutorial, we will be using EasyBCD, which is a free utility to edit and repair boot loader.

The first thing that we will be doing to downgrade windows 8 to windows 7 is to remove Windows 8 option from the boot loader. This can be done by using a free utility – EasyBCD. After downloading and installing it, run the utility with administrative privileges. Click on “Edit boot menu”, select “Windows 8 Consumer Preview” and then click on “Delete”. Also check mark the box to set a previous version of Windows to load by default. Finally, save the settings.

From the sidebar of this utility, click on “BCD backup/repair”. Select “Re-create/repair boot files” and then click “Perform Action”.

This step would remove Windows 8 from the boot loader. Restart your computer and check if you are getting the option to boot in to Windows 8 from the boot loader. If you are not getting any such option then you are good to go. Head over to step 3.

Now that we have got rid of the boot loader, its time to remove the Windows 8 parition. Decide whether you want to remove the partition and merge it, or whether you want to just format it. If you select the latter option, then all you need to do is to just right-click on that Windows 8 partition and click on “Format”.

Since the boot loader is removed, you can safely delete Windows 8 partition. Doing this is very easy. Simply right-click on the drive where Windows 8 is installed and then click on “Format”. You can also merge this partition with some other partition by using Disk Management. Type “disk management” from the Start menu and press enter. From here, you can select Windows 8 partition and delete it. After doing this, you will see the space as “unallocated”. Select the drive that you want to merge this partition with and click on “Extend vloume”. This will complete the process to downgrade windows 8 to windows 7.And before you try to downgrade windows 8 to windows 7 please double check to backup your data on another drive.

The other way round to downgrade windows 8 to windows 7 would be to rename windows folder of windows 8 as winold and then do a fresh installation of windows 7.This will create a new windows folder for windows 7 and thus help you to downgrade windows 8 to windows 7.Though this way to downgrade windows 8 to windows 7 can be risky!!!

Operating system is not an application, it is a different one. Like Bruce said backup your data then install your windows 7 again.

You will need to backup all of your data files, do a clean install of Win7 and all of your applications, then restore your data. There is not a way to uninstall Win8CP to your old OS. This is why it is always recommended that you either backup your entire system or image it before installing a beta, especially an operating system.
