How can I retrieve files from a microSD card that broke in half?

Maribel asks:

My 8GB microSD card broke in half. How can I fix it to retrieve the pictures or to see if any are on there?

    Hi Maribel,

I wish there was an easy solution to this problem, but unfortunately there isn’t. You will [most likely] have to take the card to a local hardware recovery expert. If you give me your zip code I could help locate one for you.

This can be very expensive depending on who does it and how badly it is damaged.

Is that even possible? I mean, I know hard disks can be recovered, but surely if she’s broken the physical memory chip in half…?

      I would say “give up”.

Yes, it’s possible ($200 possible). It could be worth it, depending on whats on the drive. I would also say give up and hopefully keep a backup next time!

i have the same problem x_x i need all my data! what i can do?

  • Jonathan Salcedo December 10, 2011

I have the same problem.  I would really like my data too.  I know a couple engineer minded people.  I will ask around.

  • Mike December 21, 2011

It always depends on where/how the card is broken.

If only the connector or the PCB with the circuit is broken one could take the memory chip off and solder it to another PCB [of the same kind] and try to read the data.

If the memory chip(s) are broken your best chance (if there is any) is to visit an [selected] expert. Contact the manufacturers support and ask for a recommended specialist.
