How can I retrieve contacts exported to my SD Card?

I have an HTC Desire. I recently updated to Android 2.3.3. Before updating, I took my contacts and backed them up on an SD Card via the Export All option. Once I was done, I tried to import my contacts from the SD Card but I receive an error. I also tried third party software to open the .VCF file in excel, outlook, etc but the error I keep getting is “Cannot open this file, this file either corrupted or in use by another program.” How can I retrieve my contacts?

While moving your contacts,have you performed this step –

Go to People -> press Menu button -> Import/Export -> Export Contacts to SD Card.
