How can I restore my iPhone 3GS?

I have a new iPhone 3GS. I somehow got it into restore mode before I turned it on, so I don’t even know what version of iOS is installed. I don’t want to restore through itunes, I don’t want baseband updated. When I try a custom restore to preserve baseband, it gives me “Error 1600/1604” even thought I put it in DFU mode. What can I do?

Well, I would recommend restoring with iTunes, But a alternate out the is iDeviceRestore. I have not tried it, and I probably will never try it on my iDevices. Also a fix using iTunes is here: http://iphone-downloads.hubpages.com/hub/Fixing-1604-iPhone-Restore-Error--How-To-Go-About-Fixing-1604-iPhone-Restore-Error

    1. try downloading and installing the latest iTunes version
    2. try a different USB port (do not use a HUB, for a desktop pc try a port on the backside)
    3. make sure you are in DFU mode (black screen) not recovery mode (iTunes logo)
