Cain asks:
After running the WinHelpOnline fix for the .lnk file extension problem all was fixed and ran fine for about four hours. Now it has occurred again and I wonder what is causing the file extensions to change in the first place?

January 13, 2011Hi
Well possible a malware infection, reboot to safe mode and rescan with clamwin and malwarebytes antimalware.
try File Association Fixer

Also fix taskmanager, regedit
Quick Disaster Recovery

RRT v6.0.0.5 (Remove Restrictions Tool)- Sergiwa Antiviral Toolkit

Click Start=>All Programs=>Accessories=>right-click command prompt=>select Run as Administrator=> type sfc /scannow, tap enter. This will examine and attempt to repair system files. It will take a while

January 13, 2011Are you running some cleaning software on your system?
Maybe a registry cleaner in the background or so?
