How can I best rename PDFs using Windows Explorer and the preview pane?

I have a huge amount of scientific articles that needs to be renamed according to the title of the text themselves, instead of the stupid random number they get when you download them from academic databases.

To do so, I currently select each file in Explorer with preview pane on, F2 to rename, and manually type the title I see in the preview. I’d be much easier if I could actually copy&paste what I see in the preview. Or find another way entirely.

Hello, from the looks of things you will be using this tool extensible.  In your case, I would spend a little bit of cash and get XYplorer.  It is a explorer replacement for windows.  It includes all the functions you need to rename your pdf files.  It shows previews, does batch renaming, tabbed browsing, etc.  Here is the link:

    XYplorer:
    http://www.xyplorer.com/product.htm#rename

    or,

    APDF - Preview and rename:
    http://www.a-pdf.com/preview-rename/index.htm

You could download the trial both software shown above to check if you are satisfied with results.
