How do I recover a product code after installing the wrong version of Windows?

I bought a refurbished Acer laptop which had Windows 7 installed. However I had some problems which started when I tried to upgrade Internet Explorer 9 to 11.

It failed to install, so I tried to correct it but because my knowledge of PCs is extremely limited I thought it would be easier to use my son’s copy of Windows 7 not realizing that I would need a copy of my product code. Unfortunately, the product code isn’t on my PC.

Now I am told that I am using a pirated copy. I have tried to restore to a previous time but I still cannot go back to my original version of Windows 7.

Please can you help? Thank you!

if your recovery partition is intact perhaps you can use it to reinstall windows and should be automatically activated.

How to restore a Windows 7-based computer to a previous Windows installation by using the Windows.old folder
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971760/en

Also when you insalled windows 7 it should create windows.old folder you can try to get the serial from there
try to scan that folder with Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder
    http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder/
install click on Tools and choose load hive then point it to C:Windows.old

you can try also Nirsoft ProduKey
