How can I recover data from cracked DVD?

Tom Christo asks:

I have a bunch of photos on a DVD which now has a crack that is about one inch long starting from the centre hole. Is there any way I can recover these photos? I have tried scotchtaping the label side and pressing this firmly, but I can’t read any data having tried 3 different PCs.

    …no

No possible way if the crack starts from the center hole since optical drives start reading from inside to outside track.

If I recall correctly the very first “rings” contain media, manufacturer and format information. If this is unreadable e.g. because of the scratch the entire DVD is unreadable.

Just copy the photos that are readable, and try it on different computer, sometimes it works.
