Can you recommend a gardening software or app?

So having finally bought our own house, we’re going to try the “Good Life” and become a little self sufficient. The seedlings are starting sprout, I’ve cleared space in the garden, but I’m hopeless with time management and know nothing about growing stuff.

What I want is a piece of software for any OS that will let me manage my growing areas and tell me when something is ready to harvest / plant out, as well as helpful tips.

Key features it should have:
– Ability to enter your plants and set basic alarms / grow periods according to seed instructions and geographic location

Bonus features:
– Database of plants / vegetables with standard growing times
– UK-centred
– Ability to define “plots” so that next year, you don’t replant things in the same area and allows for rotation, some kind of history

Any ideas?

    Hi James,
Which (if any) program did you go with? I am also looking for software (for OS X, with an iOS counterpart, preferably) to do what you've outlined (help keep records and manage the garden).

    Cheers,
    Jonathan

I'm afraid none of them suited my needs - they all look like they were made 20 years ago - all for Windows. On Mac, the app store reveals a recent addition called "landscape design 15", but it's £40, and has no reviews. I may try to download a copy before buying. the screenshots look nice, but you can never tell with these kind of apps.

On the iOS side, I did a quick run down of some apps here: http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/5-free-gardening-apps-green-fingered-geeks-ios/ , but none are ideal for actual garden design, more for managing what to plant next.

        Thanks for the update.
I am nit so concerned about the design aspect as I find that easy enough to do in my head and on paper. Hut the managing of the hundred of plants (trees, vegetables etc.) is what I'd Luke to computerise. Most especially for managing trees because there is an element if tracking disease resistance, fruit and yield quality, etc., which then get factored into selection for seed etc.. I Di the same with smaller plants (vegetables and such) but their life cycle is much shorter so again ice found it easy enough to do on paper. Although if I was terrace trees I'd use the same system for everything.
Right now I am using a database I've set up in bento 4 which helps with storing data and retrieving it from os x and iOS.

Hmm, thanks ha14. 3d Gaden composer looks promising, but perhaps more focussed on the design aspect and less on the management side that I would like. The rest of the apps look either unsuitable or like they were made for windows 3.1 !!!

Does anyone have any iOS based suggestions? I'd hate to have to hire my own programmer just to get what I need!
