Why can I receive but not send email on my Mac?

rimanere asks:

I have a Mac running Snow Leopard. I have two email accountants in Mail. One of them is working fine, however on the second account I cannot not send emails but I can receive them.It says stmp.live.com:emailaccount.com (offline). In accounts advanced I use default ports and use secure socket layer (ssl) checked. In authentication: password. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Try changing the Authentication type to “MD5 Challenge-Response” or “NTLM”. Other then that your settings look fine (Port 25, SSL on, your user name and password).

1) Go to Mail, then Preferences.
2) Select the Accounts tab, then select the account which is unable to send mail. under “Account Information” there’s an area for “Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)” with a dropdown menu. Select the dropdown menu and go to “Edit Server List…”
3)This will take you to the server list, Account Information. You’ll want to click where it says “Advanced.”
4)Find where it says “Server port” and change this from 25, to 587.

It could be something as simple as a typo. Your question said that your Outgoing Mail Server is set to “stmp.live.com” and if that’s what it actually says, that’s the problem. It should say “smtp.live.com”.
