I get Kindle books from Amazon and read them in a Kindle Desktop eReader. I use Calibre Desktop eBook reader on Windows 7 for my ePub books and I prefer it to the Kindle reader. Is it possible to read my Kindle downloads in Calibre?

hah, that is simple to solve your problem.
kindle books is azw format and is drm protected so you need a software to remove the drm restriction that prevents you tranferring it to other devices.
you can check this article, it provides a full guide to you.

Pretty sure you can't. But if you have a valid Kindle account, Amazon has a free Kindle reader app for just about any platform you can run...
