Yahoo Webplayer and Google Audio Players can be very useful for your in this case!
You can get the yahoo player plugin from herehttp://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/yahoo-media-player/

I would suggest that you allow the user to choose whether or not they want to listen. Sites that play music/videos without user consent are a huge UX problem.

Integrating the music file as background of the site is easy and consists of two separate steps: providing the file and modify HTML code of your site. The format of the audio file can be any standard: MP3, WMA, MIDI, etc.
    1). Providing file:
This means, the file should have an Internet address and to be located on the Web server, allowing direct opening. What you need is called URL - Internet address where it is located.
2). Modifying the HTML code on your site:
Edit HTML code. Immediately after the tag insert the following code:
    HTML Code:

sorry can't find the ref for this
    quick drop in :>)

Add this code in header.php of your theme. Make sure you replace src=" " with your music file.

This is a cross browser compatible html5 code. you just need HTML 5 for this

Etiquette note: lots of people really, really hate it when a website automatically plays music upon opening. If they're already listening to music it will overlap with it and sound bad, for example; if they're in an office or library it can be embarrassing for music to suddenly start playing. Offer music by all means, but if you don't want people leaving your blog immediately I'd highly recommend not having it start automatically.

Also, is your website at WordPress.com, or is it self-hosted? Many of the (excellent) options outlined here will not work at WordPress.com – plugins there are limited to an approved set.

This. Music playing makes me instantly close the site, and blacklist it with my google addon thing (which google apparently uses to identify poor quality sites, so you may suffer in the search results, FYI)

Completely agree. Music should not automatically play. It could put your visitors in a awkward situation depending on where they are when they open your site.

There are a lot of audio player plugins available for wordpress. Here is a list of Top 5

Audio Player – This plugin offers a stylish audio player functionality to your WordPress blog which can be easily customized to play an audio file of your choosing.

WS Audio Player – This is a nice plugin that adds an audio player with a download function to your blog. Very useful for bands or any other group that offers music or sound effects as a promotional tool.

1 Bit Audio Player – This is an adobe flash based audio player that offers automatic JavaScript insertion into your blog. Allows you to make easy preview sounds for music or anything else you may be offering on your blog.

Mu (Micro) Audio Player – This is a very nice plugin that is so tiny at 450 bytes, that is used to create a small flash based player for MP3 file links that are clicked. It also fades in and out when the player is clicked to remove or show on the page.

SSG WordPress Google Audio Player – This is an advanced tool that allows you to seek out audio from Google searches and play them on your WordPress blog. Has an auto configuration feature that is very easy to use.
