look for colors templates so that your website does not look like a child's drawing book
website creator softwares have color themes, do check them to get an idea

this depends on the purpose of your website.. if it is for music, then black, red, white, would give a sleek look. try to get an idea from existing similar web sites.

One that I recommend is Adobe Kuler!
But, it depends on the web page that you are building, how you plan to build it (I mean in graphical look...).
Also, I think, using a white background, would be the better option..
Also, depending on the site you are building, using colors between white and black, and the middle ones..
Anyway, Adobe Kuler is one of the best option, in my opinion...
Hope it helps you a little!

I found this site is useful; it gives a good rational for using analog and complimentary color schemes, no matter what your preference:

Whatever color combinations you decide, ensure that the colors tie in well with the overall design schematic.
