How much should I pay for an Intel MCH BD82HM55 South Bridge?

shegzy4 asks:

My HP DV6 displays a black screen and I have tried all the methods I saw here, but not working.

I went to an engineer and he showed me the spoilt Intel MCH, but very costly. Please, how much is Intel MCH BD82GM55 South Bridge? How much is it in dollars? Please I need an urgent answer! Thanks

You can’t just change the South Bridge of a motherboard. You have to exchange the entire thing. Since the dv6 is a laptop – depending on the internal layout the motherboard might include the graphics chip too making it quite an expensive part.

If you are out of warranty this repair will probably cost 50-70% of the original price.

You may be able to find a inexpensive replacement board on eBay but I can’t recommend buying hardware there.

I’m a bit confused since you said you’ve been to an engineer ~ didn’t he give you further options?

I’m not too familiar with the dv6 but if possible take out the hard drive, put it in an external case and backup your data.

Contact the retailer you bought the device from to check whether you still have warranty.

If that is the case the obvious choice is to go through their warranty and repair process (might take several weeks depending on where or who performs the repairs).

If it isn’t in warranty you can always get a quote on the repair costs and then decide whether you want to do it or getting a new device is the better choice.

am also confuse now, i stay in a country where they dont speak english and he told me the south bridge is faulty and they need to change it, he showed me some south bridge and he said he will fix d south bridge in a panel, the south bridge for hp dv6 cost 150$ as he said, so am also confuse now.

Obviously, I can’t tell you what really is defective or what the person showed you.

The South Bridge is a little chip on the motherboard. I found the following picture of it.

I’ve never seen the dv6 internals physically so I can’t tell you whether this chip is soldered or clipped and hold on and fixed by the red/ (or sometimes milky) glue.

Either way, I assume the $150 are for the repair part(s) only? Ask him what the entire repair will cost.

At the end you have to decide yourself whether it is worth the money or you can get a new device for little more than the repair.

yeah, the picture you showed me is d south bridge, that what he wants to
change, d south bridge contains many
legs so if one leg is bad, d others are
bad too, so he want to change d south
bridge.

what causes d south bridge to damage? Or what spoils south bridge

There are a number of things that can cause the south bridge or other components to go bad including manufacturing deficiency, heat, short circuits (e.g. water damage), …

I assume the SB is indeed technician interchangeable which adds another batch of reasons to it e.g. extreme shocks causing the chip to move and pins losing contact, moisture/humidity resulting in oxidation of contacts, …

The truth is that hardware can go bad anytime for no foreseeable reason.

yeah sure i can assume my SB was damage due to overheating, the
engineer said he will change the SB and
other metal that looks like net shape.

The main cost is not the actual south bridge chip. The cost is the expertise & equipment for replacing a surface-mounted chip. I don’t know what the price levels are in your country, but $150 would be fair for this kind of work in the UK.

shegzy4

don’t if he can repair it.

The famous HP DV6/9 black screen of death is a very well documented hardware debacle. There was even a class action lawsuit against HP. Unfortunately, this lawsuit (to my knowledge) has already been settled.

There’s an expert on this particular subject, Fidelis, on MUO. If we’re lucky, he’ll pipe in at some point.

But in the meantime I’ll try to explain what happened – basically, HP designed the DV6 in such a way that the overheating GPU will slowly destroy the rest of the computer over time. This design flaw was never successfully fixed and all DV6 motherboards eventually overheat and desolder from the motherboard, requiring replacement. It’s extremely unfortunate that HP treats its customers so poorly.

My advice is to sell the laptop on eBay for parts and use the money to purchase a new computer. In the past, I have sold a burned out DV6 for $60, which isn’t bad at all.

shegzy4

so how much can my dv6 cost if i wanna sell it.

While I didn’t get very much for my friends DV/ZV model, others have gotten quite a bit more.

For example, the highest selling broken DV6 went for $160 just recently. However, the seller has high feedback, he took great photos and he took some effort to write up a good description of the broken DV6. In order to get a similar amount of money

I’ll bet that you are also not under any kind of warranty, correct? Including extended warranties? If you are, of course you can have the machine repaired – but afterward, you should consider selling it as there are not long term fixes for the overheating issue.

Anyway, when you sell yours, remember three things: (1) take quality pictures; (2) have at least some good feedback; (3) take time to write a quality description of the item.

Good luck!
