My SanDisk MicroSD 2GB memory card used in my BlackBerry has been broken into two pieces and I would like to know if the data can be retrieved. If so, how? Can I send it to someone and how much would it cost?
Thanks

July 1, 2012I believe there is a chance that some of the data could be retrieved using a professional serice. SanDisk themselves recommend LC Technology
http://datarecovery.lc-tech.com/
Prices can be found in their service PDFs ~ for a 16GB media that would be $225 plus additional $100 because of physical damage.

Although it is possible to try to replace the casing if all of the internals are completely intact, the risk is not worth it. Using a specialty service is expensive, as suggested, but you need to weigh the benefits over the cost of repair/data recovery. Generally, it is not worth it to do so for most people in most situations.

July 1, 2012I agree with the other comments here. Although I do have an interesting story for you. I met a guy at work, an electrician, that showed me his memory stick and it was essentially broken – when you opened up the plastic case, you could see where the metal contacts broke apart.
I told him that if he could manage to carefully resolder those connection points together without frying the circuitboard, he might be able to recover the data. He reconnected the points and sure enough when he plugged in the stick, he could get access to the data long enough to copy everything off.
I guess the question is how desperately you need the data. If it’s worth the money to you, opt for a professional service. If it’s not worth the money, a fallback approach is to attempt fixing it – at least the hardware connections – yourself, or have an electrician you know give it a shot. What do you have to lose?

July 3, 2012Thanks guys but i forgot to mention that i inserted the memory card in the adaptor, so I’m not sure if i can get it out.. i tried and got out 1 part of the broken memory card and the other part is still in the adaptor. so what shall i do?
If the chip inside the memory card is still intact, then your only chance would be expensive recovery services, but chances are the info may be damaged if you tried to insert it into the computer. Wish I could tell you a simple fix, but your only option would to be to go with professional services if the information is that important to you. Doing anything more yourself may make these services impossible.

July 6, 2012My micro card has a little crack in it and when I put it in it regonises it but then half a second after it says error, can this be fixed?
It is possible that the crack caused one or more of the contacts, similar to wires, became broken as well, and the phone or computer would recognize something being connected, but cannot access any information on the card to make it recognized by the phone or computer. It really isn’t an easy fix, if possible, but soldering the contacts, which would be almost impossible without cracking the card more or even the chip inside, may make it usable to recover data. Best advice is to use professional services to recover data, if the data is that important to you. Otherwise, memory cards have dropped in price so much that replacing it would be best.
