I would like to hold 3″ x 5″ index cards on a pocket on the aluminium surface of my laptop. What material would you use for the pocket and what would you use to keep the pocket on securely?

You could try double-sided tape as the adhesive. It's reasonably strong, but can be removed entirely without the need for solvents. You can get it in stationary stores, or you can use the stronger carpet tape (same idea, just stronger). As for the pocket, it depends what you have handy - you could cut a CD envelope to size, make something out of Tyvek (although that's not transparent) or even use polethene, which you can crease into shape with some pressure and if you leave tabs at the end you fold them over to close the pocket and "glue" them with a bit more double-sided tape.
