Why can I no longer open folders with Mac Dock?

Eric asks:

Mac OS 10.5.8

I used to be able to open the applications folder from my Dock, but now it won’t launch anything that is in a folder. Even when I right-click the dock icon and choose “Open Application”, it does nothing.

Usually I can find some help somewhere on the web, but I have found nothing close to this.

My appreciation in advance.

    Have you tried repairing your permissions with Disk Utility?

    by holding down command+alt and clickin, you can also open it.
