Sally Davies asks:
I was in my bedroom replying to a message and it showed me being on Virginia Street, I live on Falcon. Then when I replied again it changed to Falcon. Why does this happen?

July 24, 2012Did you use a phone or a computer to check in FB? If you used a computer, maybe your computer’s DNS was behind this. Read more at http://goo.gl/nQoM8.
Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong

July 24, 2012Simply put, as PhĂșc mentioned, your DNS server can be swapped as and when your ISP/router decides. I often find that mine displays the next town over, then swaps back to my village.
You can set static DNS servers on some routers but it’s better for you to leave it on automatic (DNS is important for the net to work)

August 7, 2012The location service is based on the host’s server position, it may or may not be accurate in all situations.

September 6, 2012What utter rubbish from all!!! A computer’s DNS server doesn’t indicate a computer’s location! And while your computer does have an IP address, this is a virtual address on the Internet, not your real location.
On a mobile, different locations can come up depending on whether the phone is using cellular masts to identify its location (which is inaccurate), or GPS using satellies (much more accurate). Also if WiFi is turned on, location calculation is improved because mapping services have a database of WiFi hotspots, so if your phone can pick up a WiFi hotspot (even without connecting), location can be more accurate. So maybe WiFi was turned off when it put you on the wrong street, or maybe it wasn’t bothering to wait to communicate with the satellite GPS system.
