I have been using Windows 7. One day I was listening to a song, then I got a song having no default player, written Skype on it. I opened it with VLC media player.
Surprisingly, all my desktop shortcuts converted into VLC file as default. So to open a file I have to open it with “openwith” then with corresponding program. I changed the default program, for example for Adobe files I changed the default program from VLC to Adobe reader. However, after doing this all program shortcuts converted into Adobe reader files as default.
Please tell me how I can fix that!

June 9, 2010Try changing screen color depth to 16-bit, applying it, then change it back.

I believe that resets the icon cache, it did with XP.

June 9, 2010I searched online for the solution to your problem and it seems there are people who have faced the same errors. The good news is that there’s a fix. Check out the link-

It’s a registry fix so do a registry backup before merging the reg file. Of course, read the article in full and then apply the patch. As I am not facing this error, I could not try it out myself.

As Saikat recommended, make sure to backup the registry before applying the fix. The Export option will do the backup.
