How can I license free software?

I want to release some software but I don’t want to release the source code. I want my software to be used freely without charging, while retaining credit.

What license should I use and how do I go about applying it to my release? I’m doing this on my website, not through a publisher…

I have just looked and seen http://www.simply-docs.co.uk/Document.aspx?documentID=1174 - a format for software licence.

I don't know how valid these things are in law - you would have to see a lawyer, who will not do it for free, but as it's freeware.....

There are many ways of creating a licence, search and have a look at 'creative common' lots of designers, artists and software creators use this method.

Otherwise have a look at one of the freeware sites, download an app and read theirs. Obviously you don't have to have it exactly as they state but it might just help you on the road you seek - try http://www.nonags.com or http://www.tucows.com/
