Zoey Taylor asks:
I have bought a new laptop and some of my files on my hard drive like old movies etc. won’t open. I get a notification that says:
Windows Media Player cannot access the file. The file might be in use, you might not have access to the computer where the file is stored, or your proxy settings might not be correct.
How can I gain access? Can you please help?

July 10, 2012it is a common problem when you have a new laptop. First you need to change the access grant for the folder and files. For you to understand is it because of the different user account which you use to access the Folder/File.
Please refer to this guidance

July 10, 2012perhaps to move the files on other support, format hard drive and copy back, check if they will work.
try this also
1. Click on Start.
2. Go to Control Panel.
3. Select “SOUND”.
4.Choose Playback
4. Double click on speakers.
5. Click on Enhancements and then uncheck enable audio enhancements.

July 11, 2012As suggested by Ferdinan, file permissions could cause you to not play media files. Here are a couple programs you could use to simplify the process. I would take ownership of the drive to just get it over with. Just do not take ownership of your hard drive that has your operating system on it as it may make your system unusable.

August 27, 2012Hello, have you tried opening your movie files with a different program? Try opening them by downloading and installing something such as VLC.

Are you using an administrator account when trying to opening said files? I would also try changing the permissions and make sure the files are set to be open by all. As an alternative you could create a different user account matching the info used in your all computer.
